Landscape Architect vs. Landscape Designer: Which Do You Need?
The titles sound interchangeable. They are not, and the difference matters more on some projects than others.
People use the terms loosely, but there is a real distinction, and it can affect what your project is allowed to do.
What the license means
In Florida, landscape architect is a protected, licensed title. A Registered Landscape Architect has met education, examination, and experience requirements and can stamp construction documents, handle grading and drainage, and take responsibility for work that intersects with permitting and public safety. A landscape designer is an unregulated title, often a talented plant and garden specialist, but without that license or that legal scope.
When you need an architect
If your project involves grading and drainage, hardscape and structures, seawalls or shoreline, permitting, or construction that must be documented and administered, you need a licensed landscape architect. Most estate scale and waterfront projects fall squarely here.
When a designer may be enough
For a planting refresh, a garden bed redesign, or plant selection within an existing landscape, a skilled designer may be all a project needs. The question is whether the work touches the systems, water, grade, structure, that require a licensed hand.
Canopy is led by Louis Vlahos, a Florida Registered Landscape Architect, so our projects carry the full scope and accountability of the licensed profession. Learn more about the practice.
